Summer 2014 Elk Trax
The Elkton Middle School FFA Chapter has had a busy summer and is gearing up for the 2014-2015 school year.
Eleven FFA members represented EMS at the 88th Annual Virginia FFA State Convention held June 23rd-26th on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. The Dairy Judging Team consisting of Colton Allison, Summer Conley, Hannah Meadows, and Shyanne Smith won the state competition with all team members placing in the top ten. The team received a plaque and Summer, who placed second in the state, earned a silver medallion. The Food and Fiber team consisting of Tristan Eppard, Brittany Hammer, and Raven Wyant earned a bronze rating. The Ag Mechanics team consisting of Tristan Eppard, Peyton Lawson, and William Meadows also received a bronze rating. Katelyn Funkhouser, Peyton Lawson, William Meadows, and Giulianna Terrell competed in the Livestock Judging Contest. Katelyn placed 8th individually. These members represented Elkton very well at the state events.
The dairy judging team will represent Elkton Middle School in July by competing in the State 4-H and FFA Dairy Youth Field Day.
Other upcoming events include the Rockingham County Fair where we will sell food in the Federation FFA Food Booth on Saturday, August 16th. FFA members will also be competing in livestock shows throughout the week.
Any student interested in joining the FFA can pick up information from Mrs. Keyser when school starts. The FFA is a national youth organization open to any student taking an agriculture class. FFA members have meetings every nine weeks and are eligible to participate in numerous competitions throughout the year. FFA dues are $15 and will be due in September.
We will also have officer elections during the first nine weeks. Mrs. Keyser will have applications available to interested members after they have paid their dues.
If you have any questions please email Mrs. Keyser at skeyser@rockingham.k12.va.us or call the school at 540-298-1228. Information is also available on the Elkton FFA website www.emsffa.weebly.com. We look forward to a great year with more FFA members involved than ever before!!
